For more than 30 years Arnold Mayfield has been involved in professional accountancy, business and financial management and strategic business planning. In 1975, after 20 years in the rural industry, Arnold set up a general business and accountancy practice serving small to medium family businesses Australia-wide. “When people think of family business, they don't realise that these businesses can range from $100,000 to over $500 million revenue each year,” said Arnold at a recent presentation.

“The second thing that most people don't realise is that in the next five years nearly 650,000 small to medium business owners will approach the age of 65 years.”

Many owners will want to cash in their businesses to fund their retirement.

“From my experience over 30 years, I have witnessed that many business owners do not realise the true worth of their business because they could not make business decisions that managed and improved profitability and cash.”

Frequently business owners were afraid of complex historical financial statements because they did not have sufficient understanding and knowledge of the key business areas and functions that directly impact on growth in value.

Nowadays, computer processing of transactions provides a ready supply of data to be simplified into information to enable business managers to look forward and plan for value creation.
