Christian Peterson
As a result of a minor operation in 1997, a three-day
hospital admission lasted nearly six weeks. Two
weeks of very painful treatments, and an endless
cocktail of drugs, failed to stem some major post-operative
infections.
My potential for diabetes surfaced and a major
blood clot formed. A small army of medical specialists
came, but when the hospital chaplain arrived, I
knew things were a little grim and I was very depressed.
I was fast approaching clinical depression.
Maybe my mother's impending visit that afternoon
prompted the thoughts that would change my life.
Like many people, Mum and Dad had endured incredible
hardships during World War 2. Despite the horrors
of war, they managed to survive, migrating penniless
to this wonderful country. They never gave up, no
matter what happened to them.
As I lay in my bed in swill of self-pity, I thought
of their courage and determination to survive and
rebuild their lives. Slowly it dawned on me that
by giving up, by wishing to die, I would betray
what my parents' valued and had fought for.
Suddenly the bedside call button became magnetic.
The nursing staff responded quickly and within the
hour I was washed, shaven, the room tidied and I
also changed my attitude and put a smile in my voice.
As only mothers can, Mum paid me a scolding compliment
- "They told me you were dying!"
My renewed "Never Say Die" attitude fuelled
a mood change and primed emotions that stimulated
my motivation to start taking control of my life,
- first my health, then my relationships, and finally
my wealth and life-long security.
When I looked back over my life I realized that
I had significantly renovated my life a couple of
times already, from soldier to Civil Engineer to
journalist.
But my greatest achievement and renovation, I believe,
was overcoming a visual memory problem. People who
suffer poor visual memory have great difficulty
writing a simple letter. For many remembering the
rules of English grammar and spelling are very difficult.
For example, I could spell a word at a particular
moment and literally not be able to spell it 30
minutes later. I would also leave words out of sentences.
I still do at times.
Complex mathematical formulae and processes just
caused me hell while studying engineering. I just
managed a pass for my engineering degree and hated
the 108 exams I had to sit. It was during that time,
however, that I honed the skills of persistence
and tenacity.
To overcome my faltering engineering self-esteem,
I decided to shoot for the moon - journalism.
Within a year I managed to become a print and radio
journalist with publications such as 'New Scientist
and the ABC. I have been in the communication business
for nearly 25 years now.
During that time I have been made redundant twice
and each time re-invented myself.
There is nothing more powerful than achieving what
